The Broughton Model UN club has been around for nearly 30 years, having been headed by a variety of fabulous Broughton faculty, including Mr. Brian Elsasser, Mr. Yohannes Kibret and, most recently, Mr. Ben Barkley. Unfortunately, after the COVID-19 pandemic, the club faced struggles with attendance, and it wasn't until 2023 that it began building back its student membership. This started with an App State conference that won the club a Best Delegate and two Honorable Mentions. After a teacher advisor change in 2024, the crew went on to participate in Georgetown's national conference, NAIMUN, in Washington DC, in 2025. This sparked further interest in the club and a need for greater financial independence to support all the goals of the student leadership, leading to the establishment of CAPS MUNey Boosters Club!
Since then, the Broughton Model UN team has been hard at work preparing for conferences to attend in New York City, Warsaw and more. Noticing a lack of conferences in the Raleigh, North Carolina region, the student team put their creativity and leadership skills to the test by beginning a tradition of hosting a conference of their own. On October 11, 2025, the team organized and hosted one of the first student-led Model UN conferences for middle and high schools to fully incorporate GIS technology. Reflecting on the success of the event, the booster club was thrilled to support a second conference on March 21, 2026 and looks forward to continuing the tradition for years to come!
